While hiking the mountains, we spotted this cow dreaming of grass, sunshine and other cow delights
Apparently just like humans, cows have a cerebral invert cortex which allows their memories to appear when they’re in deep relaxation or sleep, so you could say cows are dreaming of munching on delicious feed or getting a moo-ssage from their cow brush while they’re in dreamland.
Overall cows get an average of 4 hours of sleep each day, though they spend most of their time lounging on their cow beds, which might even be more comfortable than your bed at home! A happy cow makes happy milk and the way to make that happen is to make sure they’re always comfortable. Our girls have the pleasure of relaxing on gel-filled mattresses which are covered with foam and rubber, which is far gentler on their hooves, joints and udder than a straw-covered cement ground. Cows are also quite particular about the tidiness of their sleeping area which is why we keep their sawdust nice and clean and sprinkle eucalyptus about for freshness. (Talk about spoiled!)
